John Gage was a founder and the Chief Researcher for Sun Microsystems, Inc. and a partner in the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, where he provided counsel to the firm’s global network of entrepreneurs, scientists, academics, and government leaders. John is on the United Nations Digital Health Task Force, and has served on panels and governing boards of the  US National Research Council; US National Academy of Sciences; National Academy Committee on Scientific Communication and National Security; Markle Task Force on National Security; Board of Regents of the US National Library of Medicine; Board of Trustees of Fermi National Laboratory; External Advisory Council for the World Bank; Board of Trustees of the Internet Society (ISOC); United Nations Task Force on Digital Health; Advisory Board of the World-Wide Web Foundation; Advisory Board of the University of Oxford Martin School; Board of the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation in Nairobi; Relief International; Human Needs Project; the Malaysian Multimedia Corridor International Advisory Panel; the University of California, Berkeley Center for Information Technology in the Service of Society, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the Harvard Kennedy School. John did his doctoral work in mathematics and economics at UC Berkeley, then joined Bill Joy as one of the original employees of Sun Microsystems. He created NetDay, the first crowd-sourced initiative to link all 140,000 US schools to the Internet in 1996, which continued in Korea, UK, France, Malaysia, Rwanda and other countries. He is an advisor in the design of the Obama Presidential Library, to focus on Africa’s future. He is a member of the Mathematical Association of America, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
